A Type VIIB U-boat sunk in a night surface action with the destroyer USS Roper on April 14, 1942 — the first U-boat destroyed by US naval forces off the American East Coast in WWII. It lies in roughly 90-100 ft (30 m) about 14 miles east of Oregon Inlet.
