Map of USS Massachusetts

USS Massachusetts

Florida · 0–9.1 m

USS Massachusetts (BB-2), launched in 1893 and considered the oldest American battleship still in existence, was used as an artillery target off Pensacola in 1920-21 and settled in about 26 feet of water at the mouth of Pensacola Pass. The 350-foot hulk is now a Florida Underwater Archaeological Preserve and listed site, with her turrets visible above the surface at low tide. The shallow, sunlit wreckage swarms with marine life, but ripping tidal currents make slack-tide timing mandatory.

Catfish Hotel Sink

Florida · 3–21.3 m

Catfish Hotel is a duckweed-covered karst window in Manatee Springs State Park on the Suwannee River, connected to the Manatee Springs cave system. Divers descend a wooden staircase into a ~35 ft basin, with a large cavern entrance around 50 ft that opens into a daylight zone reaching about 70 ft. It is a classic North Florida cavern/cave training and staging site, named for the schools of catfish that congregate in the basin.
