Map of Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas National Park

Florida · 1–21.3 m

Dry Tortugas National Park protects seven remote islands and some of the most pristine coral reef in the continental U.S., 70 miles west of Key West around historic Fort Jefferson. Access is only by ferry, seaplane, or boat; snorkelers can shore-enter along Garden Key's moat wall and beaches, while scuba diving — including the popular Windjammer (Avanti) wreck in about 20 ft off Loggerhead Key — requires a private vessel or the park's approved dive charter since tanks are banned on the ferry and seaplane. Expect superb visibility, abundant sea turtles (the park's namesake), and large grouper in a lightly fished ecosystem.

Map of San Pablo (W) Ship

San Pablo (W) Ship

Florida · Up to 25.6 m

The San Pablo, known locally as the 'Russian Freighter,' was a 315-foot fruit hauler torpedoed by a U-boat off Costa Rica in 1942, refloated, and then deliberately destroyed off Pensacola in 1944 during a secret U.S. weapons test using a radio-controlled boat packed with 3,000 pounds of explosives. The blast scattered her across the seafloor in about 84 feet of water, leaving boilers, refrigeration coils and large sections of twisted hull to explore. It is site #2 on the Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail and one of Pensacola's most popular intermediate wreck dives.

Map of Volusia Blue Spring

Volusia Blue Spring

Florida · 1.5–36.6 m

Volusia Blue Spring is a first-magnitude spring on the St. Johns River in Blue Spring State Park, famous as one of Florida's largest winter manatee refuges. Open water divers can descend the steep limestone chimney to about 50-60 ft, where a warning sign marks the cave entrance; cave-certified divers can continue to roughly 120 ft against very strong flow. The spring run and boil are closed to all water activities from mid-November to mid-March while hundreds of manatees shelter in the 72°F water.

Map of Molasses Reef

Molasses Reef

Florida · 1.8–27.4 m

Molasses Reef is one of the most heavily dived spur-and-groove coral reefs in the world, sitting at the seaward edge of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary off Key Largo. Marked by its iconic light tower, the reef offers more than 30 mooring-buoyed sites from 6-ft snorkel gardens to 90-ft outer ledges, with named features like Hole in the Wall, Winch Hole and the Aquarium. Mild current along the outer edge makes for easy drift dives, and fish life is exceptional thanks to decades of no-take protection.
