The short version
PickADive is free and built for divers. You can browse dive sites, conditions, and forecasts, and keep a dive log entirely on your device without an account. If you create an account, we store only what’s needed to sync your saved sites and dive log across devices and to send the alerts you turn on. We never sell your data, and we never use your health data for advertising.
What we collect and why
- Account email— when you sign in with Apple, Google, or email, to identify your account and sync your data. Sign in with Apple’s “Hide My Email” is fully supported.
- Dive log— the dives you record or import (date, site, depth, duration, notes, buddies, and the conditions snapshot at the time), including depth and temperature profiles downloaded from your own dive computer over Bluetooth or from dive-log files you open. Stored on your device first; mirrored to your account only when you’re signed in.
- Apple Health dive workouts — if you choose to import from Apple Watch, we read your dive workouts (depth and water temperature) to add them to your log. PickADive requests read-only access to Apple Health; we never write to Apple Health, and we do not use Health data for any purpose other than building your dive log. Apple Health does not let apps request only dive workouts, so the permission covers workouts generally — we read only dive workouts and ignore everything else. Imported values become part of your dive log and sync to your account like any other logged dive. Health data is never used for advertising, marketing, or use-based data mining, and we never sell it or disclose it to any third party for that party’s own purposes. When you are signed in, dive data you import is stored with the infrastructure providers that run PickADive (our cloud database and hosting providers), acting only on our instructions and solely to store and sync your logbook. No one else receives it. Our Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy covers this in full.
- Location— only when you tap to use it, to show nearby dive sites and sort this weekend’s condition windows by distance. Coordinates are sent to our server to look up nearby sites; we do not store a history of your location. If you haven’t granted location, the app may use your network connection’s approximate region (the same coarse signal any website sees) to suggest popular dive sites — never stored, never precise.
- Waitlist and alert emails — if you join the app waitlist or a conditions-alert waitlist, we store your email (and the dive site you asked about) solely to send early-access invites and launch news. Waitlist entries are deleted on request via privacy@pickadive.com and purged once the waitlist has served its purpose.
- Content you contribute — reviews, site submissions, photos, and condition reports you choose to post, which are associated with your account.
- Diagnostics — basic, aggregated crash and usage data to keep the app working. The iOS app includes no third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.
- Website analytics— our website uses privacy-respecting, cookie-free analytics to measure aggregate usage, and our map provider receives your IP address and standard map-usage telemetry when map tiles load. We also use PostHog for product analytics — which pages and features are used, and anonymized session recordings in which everything you type is masked before it leaves your browser. We honor your browser’s Do Not Track setting. We do not use advertising or cross-site trackers anywhere.
Notifications
If you turn on an alert bell for a saved site, we send a push notification when its conditions look favorable. You control this per site and can turn it off anytime; push permission is only requested when you first enable an alert. To deliver these pushes we store your device’s notification token with your account; it is deleted with your account.
Where your data lives
Account data is stored with our cloud database provider and protected by row-level security so you can only access your own records. Forecast and tide data come from public weather models and government marine data sources. We do not sell personal data to anyone.
Deleting your account and data
You can delete your account at any time — in the iOS app under Profile → Delete account, or on the web from Account settings. This permanently removes your account, saved sites, alerts, reviews, and the dive logs backed up to your account. Dives logged only on your device stay on your device until you delete the app. To request deletion another way, email privacy@pickadive.com.
Your privacy rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and we will never treat you differently for exercising those rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in US state privacy laws. For EU/UK visitors: we process the data above to provide the service you asked for (contract) and to keep it running securely (legitimate interest). Contact: privacy@pickadive.com.
How long we keep it. Account data is kept while your account is open and deleted when you delete it. Waitlist emails are deleted once the waitlist has served its purpose. Anonymous, aggregated usage data is not tied to you and may be kept indefinitely.
Where it is processed. PickADive is operated from the United States, and data is stored and processed there. If you use PickADive from the EU or UK, your data is transferred to the US. Where required, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses with our providers. EU/UK users may also lodge a complaint with their local data protection supervisory authority.
Do Not Track. Some browsers send a “Do Not Track” signal. There is no common industry standard for responding to it. PickADive does not track you across third-party websites or over time, so we do not change our behavior in response to these signals. We do not allow third parties to collect personally identifiable information about your activity across different websites through our service.
Children
PickADive is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If we learn that someone under 13 has created an account, we delete it.
Security
All data moves over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and account records are protected by row-level security so each account can only read its own data. No system is perfectly secure; if we ever learn of a breach affecting your personal data, we will notify affected users and the authorities as required by law.
Changes and contact
We’ll update this page if our practices change. Questions about privacy? Email privacy@pickadive.com. See also our Terms of Use.
