Sebastian Inlet

Sebastian Inlet State Park straddles a man-made cut between the Atlantic and the Indian River Lagoon, with miles of shallow nearshore rock reefs starting just south of the inlet. Snorkeling and scuba are allowed everywhere except under the bridge and in the boat channel, and spearfishing is prohibited within the park. The shallow reefs hold tropicals, lobster and rays, but the inlet's powerful tidal flow makes timing around slack/high tide essential.

Three Coal Barges

Three runaway coal barges were scuttled during an emergency in 1974 about a mile off Pensacola Beach and now form site #1 of the Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail. The barges sit in roughly 50-54 feet of water and, after five decades of storms, are slowly collapsing into low-relief steel reef. Their shallow depth, easy layout and abundant fish make them a favorite for newly certified divers and skills training.

Eagle's Nest

Eagle's Nest is a remote sinkhole in the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area near Weeki Wachee, often called the 'Mount Everest of cave diving.' An unassuming pond drops through a narrow chute into an enormous ballroom and deep upstream/downstream tunnels mapped to 310 ft. It is acclaimed as one of the deadliest cave-diving sites in the world, with more than ten fatalities since 1981, and is restricted to fully cave-certified divers who register with FWC for each dive.
