Map of Hathaway Pond

Hathaway Pond

Massachusetts · 1.5–17.4 m

Hathaway's Pond is a 20-acre freshwater kettle pond in Barnstable considered one of the best training sites in New England, with a maximum depth of about 57 ft. Attractions include a wooden training platform at roughly 20 ft about 70 ft off the swim beach, a 35-ft cabin cruiser (the Field & Sea, sunk in 1979) at about 30 ft, and a sunken car. With no current and easy beach entry it hosts certification classes year-round and serves as the standard fallback when Cape Cod ocean sites are blown out. The pond is stocked with trout and also holds bass, perch, sunfish, and catfish.

Mermet Springs

Illinois · 4.6–36.6 m

Mermet Springs is a spring-fed former rock quarry of about 8.5 acres near Belknap in far southern Illinois, and one of the most famous inland dive sites in the country. Its signature attraction is the Boeing 727 used in the film 'U.S. Marshals,' resting with its tail at 15 feet and nose at 50 feet and open for trained divers to swim through, alongside many other sunken vehicles and training platforms. The quarry reaches about 120 feet deep and is run as a full-service commercial dive park.

When the dam was completed in the early 1960s the town of Higden was relocated, and submerged homes, building foundations and roadbeds remain popular dive targets, along with island walls and rock structure mapped by the regional dive community. Diving is staged from Corps recreation areas such as Dam Site and Sugar Loaf.

Perdido Pass Jetties / Alabama Point

Alabama · Up to 8 m

Alabama Point (the Perdido Pass jetties) is a popular walk-in shore dive on the east/southeast side of Perdido Pass in Orange Beach, with public beach parking, restrooms and showers. The rock-and-concrete jetty drops into roughly 5-21 ft of water and hosts abundant marine life, but the area carries heavy boat traffic and tidal current, so divers should use a dive flag and time the dive for an incoming tide near high water. Visibility can reach about 25 ft on good days.
