Point Pinos

The rocky northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula, where Monterey Bay meets the open Pacific. Rock ridges, kelp beds and depths from 20 to 120 feet reward divers with dense invertebrate life, but the boulder-covered beaches, breakers and currents make it an advanced shore dive that is only safe in ideal conditions. Several pullouts along the shoreline serve different entries; many divers prefer to dive it by boat.

P. C. Barge

The PC Barge and Towers is a public artificial reef in the Escambia County reef zone off Pensacola Beach, consisting of a steel barge with holes opened along its sides and two sets of steel towers deployed alongside. The complex sits on sand in about 82 feet of water and provides good relief for schooling baitfish, snapper and spadefish. It is typically dived by charter together with the nearby Soule Barge, Tug Sylvia and Tug Deliverance.

Pretoria Wreck

The 338-foot Pretoria, the largest wooden schooner-barge ever built on the Great Lakes, foundered off Outer Island in a 1905 storm with the loss of five crew. Her broken hull — large sections of sides, deck and bottom — lies on sandstone bedrock in a maximum of 54 feet of water amid a debris field that extends for miles. A WHS seasonal mooring buoy marks the main wreckage, making this remote Apostle Islands site a worthwhile intermediate dive when Lake Superior cooperates.

HMS Culloden Wreck

The HMS Culloden, a British 74-gun warship, ran aground and was burned to the waterline off what is now Culloden Point near Montauk on January 24, 1781. In about 15-25 ft of water in Fort Pond Bay, it became New York's first designated underwater preserve and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. It is a shallow shore dive, though notoriously hard to locate—usually only rust stains and scattered hull remain visible; artifact removal is prohibited.

Avalon Dive Park

Casino Point Dive Park (Avalon Underwater Park) is a roughly 2-2.5 acre roped-off, no-take marine reserve beside the landmark Catalina Casino in Avalon, widely regarded as the best shore dive in California. Custom concrete stairs with handrails lead straight into a lush giant kelp forest over reefs, mini-walls and sand flats from 10 to 100 ft, with several small wrecks including the 54-ft sailboat Suejac (bow at ~95 ft), the Kismet, a glass-bottom boat and a sunken swim platform, plus an underwater Jacques Cousteau memorial plaque at about 35 ft. Established in the 1960s as the first non-profit underwater park in the country, its protected status makes the fish unusually bold and the site ideal for everyone from open-water students to photographers.

SS Cumberland Wreck

The Cumberland was a wooden side-wheel passenger steamer that grounded on Rock of Ages Reef at Isle Royale's western tip in July 1877 and broke up. Large sections of her wooden hull, her huge side-wheel, and a boiler lie in 20-80 ft, intermingled with wreckage of the steel freighter Henry Chisholm, which struck the same reef 21 years later. The two-wrecks-in-one site is a fascinating archaeology dive at moderate depth, though the reef is fully exposed to Lake Superior weather.

Mohawk Verified

Mohawk is the wreck of a 387 ft Clyde-Mallory/Ward Line passenger-cargo liner sunk after a 1935 collision. The wreck is a large debris field with bow and stern structure remaining and a max depth around 80 ft / 24 m. It is an established New Jersey boat wreck, separate from R.C. Mohawk and older Mohawk records.
