Arus Balee (Bastard Current)

Aceh · 5–31 m

Reputedly the most beautiful reef around Pulau Weh, a current-swept slope densely packed with gorgonian fans, staghorn and table coral. Strong flow draws large giant trevally and dense schools of fish, sometimes so thick they dim the light. Its English nickname reflects the demanding current; best run as a drift on slack or favourable tide.

Sophie Rickmers Wreck

Aceh · 37–55 m

A 134 m German cargo ship scuttled by her own crew in 1940 in a sheltered bay off Pulau Weh to avoid Dutch capture. The top of the wheelhouse sits at about 37 m, the decks at around 45 m, and the bow lies beyond 55 m, so the wreck is a deep decompression dive for experienced divers only. Operators typically require Advanced and Rescue certification with 100+ logged dives.

Aceh · 10–40 m

A signature Pulau Weh dive on a large pinnacle split into two, creating a central canyon between rocky outcrops that range from about 10 to 30 m, with a deeper west wall of nutrient-rich gorgonians dropping toward 60 m. Massive sea-fan forests are blanketed in clouds of Indian triggerfish, while giant and bluefin trevally hunt in packs. Currents make for an exciting dive with reef macro life on the rocks.

Aceh · 5–40 m

One of Pulau Weh's most popular sites, a central rock that drops from the surface to around 22 m before sloping to about 40 m, exploring a colourful coral reef. It is the most reliable Weh site for big fish, with giant trevally, schooling barracuda and horse-eye jacks, plus occasional blacktip reef sharks. Good macro life including leaf scorpionfish and mantis shrimp rounds out the dive.

A reef dive on Pulau Weh on a sloping coral reef holding the standard Southeast Asian reef community of giant clams, surgeonfish, moorish idols and nudibranchs.
