Roubidoux Spring

A major Ozark spring in Laughlin Park, Waynesville, feeding Roubidoux Creek with an average flow of 37 million gallons per day. Below the basin lies one of the best-known cave dives in the Midwest, with surveyed line extending over 11,000 ft and depths reaching about 270 ft; the system has not been fully explored. The City of Waynesville manages access: divers must present cavern/cave certification and sign in at the 911 Emergency Center before diving and sign out afterward. No fee is charged.

Rouse Simmons Wreck

The Rouse Simmons, the legendary Christmas Tree Ship, sank in a November 1912 storm with all 16 aboard while carrying thousands of evergreens to Chicago. Rediscovered in 1971, the 1868 schooner lies remarkably intact in 165 feet of water about 12 miles northeast of Two Rivers, trees reportedly still in her hold. Now protected within the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary, she is one of Lake Michigan's most storied deep wreck dives for technical divers.

Rubicon Wall (D.L. Bliss State Park)

Rubicon Wall, just south of Calawee Cove in D.L. Bliss State Park on Tahoe's southwest shore, is widely regarded as the most breathtaking dive in the Sierra: a near-vertical fractured granite precipice studded with quartz that plunges from a rim at about 40-50 ft to 800-1,000+ ft. Divers reach it by a ~900 ft surface swim from Calawee Cove (or by boat) and drop over the edge into exceptionally clear blue water — visibility of 70-100 ft is common — passing crawfish on the cliff face and huge schools of fingerling trout and Lahontan redside shiners in the 30-35 ft shallows. At 6,229 ft elevation the altitude penalty is severe (130 ft measures like ~162 ft physiologically), making this a disciplined advanced dive despite the easy beginner terrain inside the cove.

Ruby E Wreck (Wreck Alley)

A 165-ft former US Coast Guard cutter (originally the Cyane, built 1934) intentionally sunk in 1989 as part of San Diego's Wreck Alley artificial reef, about two miles off the Mission Beach jetty. She sits upright and largely intact on sand at about 85 ft, with the superstructure starting near 50 ft, and is carpeted in pink and purple strawberry (corynactis) anemones. Most areas of the wreck except the bilge are accessible to trained divers, and the site is usually marked with a buoy.

Russell's Reef/Great Gull

Russell's Reef, also known as Great Gull Reef, is a Maryland artificial reef of slightly under 1,000 acres located 4.2 nautical miles southeast of the Ocean City Inlet on the Great Gull Bank. Concrete reef material in roughly 30-45 ft of water attracts sea bass, tautog and flounder, and the site's proximity to the inlet makes it a convenient shallow dive and spearfishing area.

S.S. Inchulva / Delray Wreck (wreck)

The SS Inchulva, a 386-ft British steamship that sank in the 1903 hurricane with the loss of nine crew, lies scattered in 15-25 ft of water only about 150 yards off Delray Beach's Anchor Park. Known locally as the Delray Wreck, its boilers, propeller shaft and hull plates spread across a debris field roughly 70 ft wide, making it one of South Florida's few true swim-out shore wrecks. It doubles as an artificial reef busy with tropicals, snapper and the occasional turtle, and is popular with both snorkelers and scuba divers on calm days.

Saguaro Lake (Keyhole / Vista Point)

A Salt River reservoir in the Tonto National Forest northeast of Mesa, dived mainly at the Keyhole cove (with a dock allowing a giant-stride entry) and Vista Point. It is a low-visibility desert lake — typically up to 15 feet at best, with a sharp thermocline around 19 feet in summer dropping temperatures 6-10 degrees — used by Phoenix-area divers for convenient training and night dives. Silty bottoms demand careful fin technique.

Saint Andrew's Bay

The St. Andrews State Park jetties guard the entrance channel of St. Andrew Bay in Panama City Beach and are the Panhandle's best-known shore dive. After a short swim across a sheltered 8-10 foot lagoon, divers cross the granite jetty and work along boulders that drop from about 20 to 70 feet on the channel side, where Gulf and estuary species mix. Timing the dive to high slack tide is essential, as the tidal exchange through the pass generates strong currents and the channel carries constant boat traffic.

Salt Creek Recreation Area (Tongue Point)

Often called the best shore diving in Washington, this Clallam County park sits on the Strait of Juan de Fuca about 13 miles west of Port Angeles beside the Tongue Point Marine Life Sanctuary. Rocky reef fingers, kelp beds and surge channels hold open-coast life rarely seen inside Puget Sound, with most diving in the 20-40 ft range beyond the kelp line. It is an advanced, ocean-exposed site - swell, surge and thick kelp demand careful timing - and the easiest of the three diver access points is the staircase beside campsite #63.

Samuel P. Ely Wreck

The Samuel P. Ely, a 200-foot three-masted schooner, was driven against the Agate Bay west breakwater at Two Harbors in an October 1896 gale. Her remarkably intact wooden hull now rests in 15-35 feet of water angled off the breakwall, with the stern embedded in the structure. GLSPS volunteers have installed internal bracing to stabilize the hull, and the shallow depth makes it one of Minnesota's most popular and forgiving Lake Superior wreck dives, though it requires a short boat ride across the harbor and visibility is often limited.

San Carlos Beach / Breakwater Wall

The most popular shore dive in Monterey, located beside the 1,700-foot Coast Guard breakwater built in the 1930s. A gently sloping sandy beach gives one of the most protected entries in the area, leading to a boulder wall encrusted with strawberry anemones, sponges, tunicates and nudibranchs, with a resident sea lion colony at the breakwater tip. Heavily used by training classes; weekend visibility suffers and parking fills early.

San Pablo (Russian Freighter)

The San Pablo, locally called the Russian Freighter, was a banana/fruit transport ship destroyed in 1944 off Pensacola and now lying about 9 miles offshore as a broken rubble field in roughly 80-83 ft of water with up to about 8 ft of relief. Although it lies just over the line in Florida waters off Pensacola, it is a standard regional dive run from Alabama charters. Divers explore scattered boilers, refrigeration coils and twisted hull sections rich with marine life.

San Pablo (W) Ship

The San Pablo, known locally as the 'Russian Freighter,' was a 315-foot fruit hauler torpedoed by a U-boat off Costa Rica in 1942, refloated, and then deliberately destroyed off Pensacola in 1944 during a secret U.S. weapons test using a radio-controlled boat packed with 3,000 pounds of explosives. The blast scattered her across the seafloor in about 84 feet of water, leaving boilers, refrigeration coils and large sections of twisted hull to explore. It is site #2 on the Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail and one of Pensacola's most popular intermediate wreck dives.

Sand Harbor (Diver's Cove)

Diver's Cove at Sand Harbor, in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, is the lake's most popular dive site: a sheltered, buoy-marked cove averaging about 30 ft deep with giant granite boulders and pass-throughs, a PVC buoyancy obstacle course, a small sunken barge, a Project Baseline monitoring station and other man-made oddities. Beyond the swim buoys a sandy hill slopes quickly into deeper water with large sunken trees and rocky outcrops (a sunken motorcycle lies off nearby Sand Point in about 90 ft). The gently sloping beach makes entries easy, but at ~6,225 ft elevation this is altitude diving, and Nevada requires a dive flag. Arrive before the 8 a.m. opening in summer - parking fills fast.
