Red Slave, near the historic red slave huts at Bonaire's far southern tip, is one of the island's most challenging shore dives, exposed to strong currents and surge from the open Caribbean. When calm, it rewards experienced divers with pristine coral, big fish and dense reef life rarely disturbed by crowds. It should only be attempted in settled conditions by confident, current-savvy shore divers.

Salt Pier sits beside the Cargill salt works on Bonaire's southwest coast, where the massive concrete pier pillars have grown into artificial reefs encrusted with coral and sponge. Beams of light between the columns and dense schools of barracuda, tarpon and grunts make it one of the island's most photogenic dives, from about 3m to 18m. Diving is only permitted when no cargo ship is loading, so check conditions and access rules before entering.

Sharon's Serenity

Sharon's Serenity on Klein Bonaire is a calm, pretty site where the mooring sits close to shore over a coral slope running from about 6m to 30m. The shallow, sheltered reef is excellent for relaxed dives and snorkelling, with healthy coral, reef fish and frequent turtles. It is a popular gentle Klein Bonaire stop.

Something Special, just south of the Kralendijk marina entrance, is a gentle slope of sand and coral famous for its colonies of garden eels and frequent seahorse and frogfish sightings. The easy shore entry and rich macro life from about 5m to 30m make it a favourite for relaxed and night dives. Tarpon often cruise the shallows near the channel.

The Cliff

The Cliff, near the Hamlet Oasis/Belmar area just north of Kralendijk, is a shore dive where the reef drops as a small wall close to shore. Easy access via a jetty/ladder leads to coral-rich slopes from about 5m to 30m, and it is one of Bonaire's premier night dives for hunting tarpon, octopus and morays. Healthy coral and convenient access make it popular for repeat dives.

The Lake is a southern Bonaire shore dive named for a calm, lagoon-like sand bowl behind the reef crest. A sloping reef from about 5m to 30m is dense with hard coral, sponges and reef fish, with good chances of turtles and rays. Its more rugged southern access keeps it quieter than the resort-area sites.

Tori's Reef is a south-central shore dive near the salt pier with large stands of elkhorn coral and a sandy bottom where southern stingrays and eagle rays are often found. The reef slopes from about 6m to 30m with healthy coral and reef fish, making it an easy and rewarding dive. Its proximity to the Hilma Hooker makes it a convenient pairing.

Town Pier in Kralendijk is one of the world's most famous muck/night dives, where the old commercial pier pilings are smothered in sponges, corals and macro life in only 3-12m. Green moray eels, seahorses, frogfish and octopus make it a photographer's dream after dark. Because it is an active harbour, diving is only allowed with a licensed operator and advance permission from the Harbour Master.
