An unnamed steel stern trawler of roughly 65 ft rests on top of Stellwagen Bank in just over 30 m of water, inside the outbound Boston shipping lane that crosses the national marine sanctuary. Decades on the bottom have split the wreck apart: the pilothouse stands upright with helm, throttle, and radio gear still visible, while the hull and stern lie separately near a lone trawl net reel, with patches of blue and white paint still clinging to the steel. NOAA and a local dive charter installed a subsurface mooring here, and divers visiting the site are helping investigate the wreck's still-unsolved identity.

The San Pablo, locally called the Russian Freighter, was a banana/fruit transport ship destroyed in 1944 off Pensacola and now lying about 9 miles offshore as a broken rubble field in roughly 80-83 ft of water with up to about 8 ft of relief. Although it lies just over the line in Florida waters off Pensacola, it is a standard regional dive run from Alabama charters. Divers explore scattered boilers, refrigeration coils and twisted hull sections rich with marine life.

Lea Lake is the largest and deepest of the eight gypsum sinkhole lakes at Bottomless Lakes State Park near Roswell, and the only one where scuba diving is permitted. It reaches about 90 feet deep with easy shore entry from the swim beach; submerged springs around 35-40 feet, known as 'Mecca', clear the water in summer when visibility can exceed 50 feet. The park hosts an annual divers' gathering (Bottomless Bubbles) over Labor Day weekend.

Madeira Wreck

The Madeira was a 436-foot steel schooner-barge driven onto Gold Rock Point beside Split Rock Lighthouse in the great Mataafa Storm of November 28, 1905. The hull broke into several large sections that now lie from about 10 feet down past 100 feet along the base of the cliff, including the pilothouse, bow and huge hull plates. It is the most famous and most dived shipwreck in Minnesota, reachable as a strenuous shore dive from the beach north of the lighthouse or, more comfortably, by charter boat. Cold water, depth and exposure to northeast seas demand solid cold-water skills.

A spring-fed flooded quarry dive park near Glencoe in northeast Alabama, between Gadsden and Anniston off US-431. Depths run from about 15 to 150 ft with visibility of 20-70 ft, a boulder-strewn bottom, sunken boats, and a semi trailer positioned over the cold spring. The park operates seasonally and caters to open-water training, certified divers, and snorkelers in a quiet picnic-friendly setting.

Rouse Simmons Wreck

The Rouse Simmons, the legendary Christmas Tree Ship, sank in a November 1912 storm with all 16 aboard while carrying thousands of evergreens to Chicago. Rediscovered in 1971, the 1868 schooner lies remarkably intact in 165 feet of water about 12 miles northeast of Two Rivers, trees reportedly still in her hold. Now protected within the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary, she is one of Lake Michigan's most storied deep wreck dives for technical divers.

The wreck of the armored cruiser USS San Diego, torpedoed/mined by U-156 on 19 July 1918 off Fire Island and sunk in 28 minutes, the only major US warship lost in World War I. It lies inverted in about 110 feet of water off Cherry Grove, Fire Island, and is one of the most famous wreck dives in the Northeast. An advanced boat dive with penetration potential and significant artifacts.
