North-shore Kauai reef off Makua Beach near Haena, named by divers for its maze of lava tubes, caverns, arches and tunnels. The inner lagoon is shallow snorkel ground; divers work the outer reef in 20-70 ft where the structure is best. Strictly a summer dive - winter North Pacific swell turns it into a surf break with dangerous currents.
