Map of The Fairfield New Venture

The Fairfield New Venture

Alabama · Up to 38 m

The Fairfield New Venture is a 250-foot former oceanographic research vessel (built 1986) intentionally sunk in 2018 roughly 20 miles south of Orange Beach, near the LuLu so both can be dived on one trip. The wheelhouse sits near 60 ft and the sand bottom reaches about 120-125 ft. Large openings cut in the hull give divers pass-throughs and access to most of the structure, making it suitable for open-water through technical divers.

Map of USS Schurz

USS Schurz

North Carolina · 30–34 m

USS Schurz began life as the German light cruiser SMS Geier, was seized at Honolulu when the US entered WWI, and sank on 21 June 1918 after a collision with the SS Florida about 30 nautical miles south of Beaufort Inlet. The 295-ft warship lies in roughly 110 ft of water with boilers rising to about 100 ft, an intact upward-pointing stern, I-beams and deck structure. Sea fans, dense baitfish schools, big rays and occasional sharks make it one of North Carolina's signature advanced wreck dives.

Map of Pebble Beach (Rockport)

Pebble Beach (Rockport)

Massachusetts · 3–10.7 m

Pebble Beach on Penzance Road is one of Cape Ann's most popular backup shore dives, prized for free roadside parking and shelter from northerly seas. A roughly 150-yard swim over sloping sand and gravel reaches a band of grassy, kelp-fringed boulders parallel to the beach, with depths topping out around 25-35 ft. Easy conditions make it well suited to new divers, though waves can complicate the loose-pebble entry.

Aurora Reservoir (Scuba Beach)

Colorado · 1.5–15.2 m

The Denver metro area's main training dive site, with a dedicated roped-off scuba beach and dive area on the reservoir's eastern shore. The signature attraction is a Cessna twin-engine airplane purpose-sunk in 1994 in about 30 feet of water, marked by a buoy; the silty bottom keeps visibility in the 5-10 ft range. The dive area is open April 1 to October 1, dawn to dusk, and is heavily used for open-water checkouts, navigation, and search-and-recovery practice.
