The 280-foot iron steamer Lakeland foundered six miles east of Sturgeon Bay in December 1924 while carrying a cargo of new Nash, Kissel and Rollin automobiles. She lies upright and largely intact in roughly 200-235 feet of water, broken nearly in half aft of her cargo elevator, with cars still visible in the hold. Famous since the mixed-gas era opened her to divers, the Lakeland is one of the Great Lakes' classic deep technical wrecks.

The scow-schooner Iris (1866) was deliberately run hard aground in Jackson Harbor, Washington Island, by its captain in March 1913. The hull lies upright and embedded in less than 4 ft of water between the Rock Island ferry dock and the Ellefson fishing piers, with stern structure protruding above the surface; the lower hull is partly buried under dredge spoil. A historic snorkeling and viewing site rather than a scuba dive — mind the adjacent ferry traffic.

A glacial lake in Grand Teton National Park at about 6,783 feet elevation, one of only two lakes in the park where scuba diving is permitted (the other is Jackson Lake). Divers can descend into an underwater forest of trees deposited by shoreline landslides, reaching down to about 100 feet, with the dramatic Teton range as a backdrop. Boat access from the West Shore Boat Dock area is used to reach the dive zone, and water temperatures around 40F require a drysuit.

Dry Tortugas National Park protects seven remote islands and some of the most pristine coral reef in the continental U.S., 70 miles west of Key West around historic Fort Jefferson. Access is only by ferry, seaplane, or boat; snorkelers can shore-enter along Garden Key's moat wall and beaches, while scuba diving — including the popular Windjammer (Avanti) wreck in about 20 ft off Loggerhead Key — requires a private vessel or the park's approved dive charter since tanks are banned on the ferry and seaplane. Expect superb visibility, abundant sea turtles (the park's namesake), and large grouper in a lightly fished ecosystem.

Matinecock Reef is a 41-acre NYSDEC artificial reef in Long Island Sound about 0.5 nautical miles north of Peacock Point, in 30-40 ft of water. Built from a barge and seven pontoons with concrete slabs added in 2025, it provides moderate relief for tautog, black sea bass and scup. Visibility is typically 10-20 ft and tide-dependent—an intermediate Sound boat dive.

A 27-acre county lake near Woodbine in western Iowa that has become a regular dive spot for the Greater Omaha SCUBA Club. Visibility averages 10-15 ft and can reach about 25 ft after stretches of calm weather. Maximum depth varies from about 22-25 ft with lake levels, with a median depth around 12-15 ft, and the surrounding 220-acre recreation area offers camping and other facilities.
