Map of B-29 Superfortress (Lake Mead, Overton Arm)

B-29 Superfortress (Lake Mead, Overton Arm)

Nevada · 29–38 m

On 21 July 1948 a U.S. Air Force B-29 Superfortress on a classified atmospheric-research flight skipped off the surface of Lake Mead and sank largely intact in the Overton Arm. The aircraft now rests in roughly 95-125 feet of fresh water (varying with lake level) and is one of the most famous inland wreck dives in the United States. The National Park Service protects the site: it may be dived only on guided, no-touch trips with the permitted operator, two divers per guide, with technical decompression certification required.

Map of Back Beach

Back Beach

Massachusetts · 3–9.1 m

Back Beach in downtown Rockport is the region's quintessential training and night-dive site: metered parking beside the sand, a rock-free walk-in entry, and a forgiving 10-30 ft bottom. By day it hosts a steady parade of open-water classes; by night divers come for sea ravens, flounder, skates and the squid that swarm dive lights in season. Visibility is typical New England — 20+ ft on a good day, under 10 ft after a blow.

Texas · 1.2–7.6 m

A 1.3-acre, 3.5-million-gallon spring-fed pool in the Chihuahuan Desert of West Texas, built by the CCC in the 1930s over San Solomon Springs. The artesian spring pumps clear 72-76 F water year-round, giving 25 ft depths with excellent visibility and two endangered desert fish species. After multi-year renovations the park is fully reopened, and scuba is allowed daily for certified divers who sign the park diving agreement.
